CONSOLE APPLICATION : rfp-srv Project Overview
========================================================================
This application is a file server for the wii. It is a PC side application that communicates with a wii NDEV kit using the HIO2 USB protocol/library.
Purpose:
--------
An application running on a NDEV kit reads its data from an emulated DVD disc . The ODEM emulator enforces strong limitations :
- once the elf has started running one should not modify the content of the DvdRoot PC directory; doing this could easily result in result in crashes
- this means that you can't add new files, and that you should not edit any files
- it is impossible to create PC files from the NDEV kit
The rfp-srv file server allows to remove these limitations.
- it allows to create files from the wii
- it allows to read PC files that did not exist at the time the elf was launched
- it allows hot modifications of files, after the elf was launched
The files that are accessed through rfp-srv are located in rfp-srv's working directory which must be located outside of the DvdRoot ODEM directory.
The wii side counterpart of this server is the rfp_hio library whose source code is in rfphio\rfphio_lib .
The code is derived from ages old C code used on Sony's PS2. It originally used BSD sockets for communications.
This is a simple port that has severe limitations:
- the library code does not support reading or writing big buffers. The client request should be limited to blocks less than 4 KB - header size. It is up to the client code to segment big requests into requests whose size fits these limits.
- the code was meant to support single file operations. Many different files can be open at the same time, but reading or writing to many files at the same time might cause issues (not tested).
- the achieved bandwidth is just below 600 KB/s
Usage :
-------
- Launch pc side executable : rfp-srv.exe
- Launch elf on NDEV
(the elf will synchronize with the exe at boot; if the exe is not running the elf will wait until it sees it)
rfp-srv will read/write the files to its working directory. Don<6F>t forget to set the working directory from the visual project properties when running a debug session.
rfp-srv uses the HIO dll corresponding to its build target. The HIO dlls are delivered in RVL_SDK\X86\bin\
The simplest way to get the system running is to copy these dlls to rfp-srv<72>s working directory.
